Given a set $A\subseteq\mathbb{N}$, we consider the relationship between stability of the structure $(\mathbb{Z},+,0,A)$ and sparsity of the set $A$. We first show that a strong enough sparsity assumption on $A$ yields stability of $(\mathbb{Z},+,0,A)$. Such sets include examples considered by Palac\'{i}n and Sklinos and Poizat, many classical linear recurrence sequences (e.g. the Fibonaccci numbers), and any set in which the limit of ratios of consecutive elements diverges. Finally, we...

We consider generalized metric spaces taking distances in an arbitrary ordered commutative monoid, and investigate when a class $\mathcal{K}$ of finite generalized metric spaces satisfies the Hrushovski extension property: for any $A\in\mathcal{K}$ there is some $B\in\mathcal{K}$ such that $A$ is a subspace of $B$ and any partial isometry of $A$ extends to a total isometry of $B$. Our main result is the Hrushovski property for the class of finite generalized metric spaces over a...

Given a countable, totally ordered commutative monoid $\mathcal{R}=(R,\oplus,\leq,0)$, with least element $0$, there is a countable, universal and ultrahomogeneous metric space $\mathcal{U}_\mathcal{R}$ with distances in $\mathcal{R}$. We refer to this space as the $\mathcal{R}$-Urysohn space, and consider the theory of $\mathcal{U}_\mathcal{R}$ in a binary relational language of distance inequalities. This setting encompasses many classical structures of varying model theoretic complexity,...

In this article it is proven that if a knot, K, bounds an imbedded grope of class n, then the knot is n/2-trivial in the sense of Gusarov and Stanford. That is, all type n/2 invariants vanish on K. We also give a simple way to construct all knots bounding a grope of a given class. It is further shown that this result is optimal in the sense that for any n there exist gropes which are not n/2+1- trivial.

According to seminal work of Kontsevich, the unstable homology of the mapping class group of a surface can be computed via the homology of a certain lie algebra. In a recent paper, S. Morita analyzed the abelianization of this lie algebra, thereby constructing a series of candidates for unstable classes in the homology of the mapping class group. In the current paper, we show that these cycles are all nontrivial, representing degree 4k+1 homology classes in the homology of the mapping class...

We define two families of expansions of $(\mathbb{Z},+,0)$ by unary predicates, and prove that their theories are superstable of $U$-rank $\omega$. The first family consists of expansions $(\mathbb{Z},+,0,A)$, where $A$ is an infinite subset of a finitely generated multiplicative submonoid of $\mathbb{N}$. Using this result, we also prove stability for the expansion of $(\mathbb{Z},+,0)$ by all unary predicates of the form $\{q^n:n\in\mathbb{N}\}$ for some $q\in\mathbb{N}_{\geq 2}$. The second...

We prove that if $T$ is a complete theory with weak elimination of imaginaries, then there is an explicit bijection between strict independence relations for $T$ and strict independence relations for $T^{\text{eq}}$. We use this observation to show that if $T$ is the theory of the Fra\"{i}ss\'{e} limit of finite metric spaces with integer distances, then $T^{\text{eq}}$ has more than one strict independence relation. This answers a question of Adler [1, Question 1.7].

We analyze a functor from cyclic operads to chain complexes first considered by Getzler and Kapranov and also Markl. This functor is a generalization of the graph homology considered by Kontsevich, which was defined for the three operads Comm, Assoc, and Lie. More specifically we show that these chain complexes have a rich algebraic structure in the form of families of operations defined by fusion and fission. These operations fit together to form uncountably many Lie-infinity and...

In this note, we calculate the leading term of the rational lift of the Kontsevich integral, introduced by Garoufalidis and Kricker, on the boundary of an embedded grope of class 2n. We observe that it lies in the subspace spanned by connected diagrams of Euler degree 2n-2 which have a bead t-1 on a single edge. This places severe algebraic restrictions on the sort of knots that can bound gropes, and in particular implies the two main results of the author's thesis, at least over the rationals.

In this paper, the easier methods of my thesis are applied to give a simple proof of a theorem of Goussarov. The theorem relates two possible notions of finite type equivalence of knots, links or string links, showing that the resulting filtrations are the same up to a degree shift by a factor of two. This is then applied to the situation of rooted claspers to show that rooted claspers of sufficiently high degree must preserve type k invariants. As a consequence, grope cobordisms of...

We use axioms of abstract ternary relations to define the notion of a free amalgamation theory. These form a subclass of first-order theories, without the strict order property, encompassing many prominent examples of countable structures in relational languages, in which the class of algebraically closed substructures is closed under free amalgamation. We show that any free amalgamation theory has elimination of hyperimaginaries and weak elimination of imaginaries. With this result, we use...

Let $\mathcal{R}=(R,\oplus,\leq,0)$ be an algebraic structure, where $\oplus$ is a commutative binary operation with identity $0$, and $\leq$ is a translation-invariant total order with least element $0$. Given a distinguished subset $S\subseteq R$, we define the natural notion of a "generalized" $\mathcal{R}$-metric space, with distances in $S$. We study such metric spaces as first-order structures in a relational language consisting of a distance inequality for each element of $S$....

Scannell and Sinha considered a spectral sequence to calculate the rational homotopy groups of spaces of long knots in n-dimensional Euclidean space, for n greater than or equal to 4. At the end of their paper they conjecture that when n is odd, the terms on the antidiagonal on the second page precisely give the space of primitive Feynman diagrams related to the theory of Vassiliev invariants. In this paper we prove that conjecture. This has the application that the path components of the terms...

For $n\geq 3$, define $T_n$ to be the theory of the generic $K_n$-free graph, where $K_n$ is the complete graph on $n$ vertices. We prove a graph theoretic characterization of dividing in $T_n$, and use it to show that forking and dividing are the same for complete types. We then give an example of a forking and nondividing formula. Altogether, $T_n$ provides a counterexample to a recent question of Chernikov and Kaplan.
